PESA is a good option for men with infertility due to:

  • Blockages: Blockages in the vas deferens (the tube that carries sperm from the epididymis to the urethra) that prevent sperm from reaching the ejaculate.
  • Congenital absence of the vas deferens (CAVD): A condition where the vas deferens is missing from birth.
  • Low sperm count: When there are not enough sperm in the ejaculate for successful fertilization, but sperm production in the testicles is believed to be normal.

PESA stands for Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration. It's a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to retrieve sperm directly from the epididymis, a coiled tube located behind the testicles where sperm mature and are stored. This sperm can then be used in fertility treatments like In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) with Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).

  • Infection: As with any surgical procedure, there's a small risk of infection.
  • Bleeding: Minor bleeding at the puncture site is possible.
  • Discomfort: Some men may experience temporary pain or discomfort after the procedure.
  • Damage to epididymis: The risk is very low, but there's a slight possibility of damaging the epididymal tubules.
