Success rates for IUI vary depending on factors like age, cause of infertility, and number of cycles performed.

The key difference between IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) and IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) boils down to where fertilization occurs:

  • IUI: Internal fertilization. Healthy sperm are placed directly into the woman's uterus around ovulation, giving them a significant advantage in reaching and fertilizing the egg that's waiting in the fallopian tube. It's like giving the sperm a VIP pass to the egg.
  • IVF: External fertilization. This is a multi-step process where eggs are retrieved from the woman's ovaries, sperm is collected, and fertilization happens in a laboratory dish. If successful, healthy embryos are then transferred back into the woman's uterus for implantation.
  • Unexplained infertility: When tests haven't pinpointed a specific reason for difficulty conceiving, IUI can be a first-line treatment.
  • Mild male infertility: If sperm count or motility is slightly low, IUI can help them reach the egg.
  • Cervical mucus issues: If cervical mucus hinders sperm movement, IUI bypasses this barrier.
