IMSI is a specialized technique used in conjunction with Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) for In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). During ICSI, a single sperm is injected directly into an egg for fertilization. IMSI takes this a step further by using high-magnification microscopy to select the morphologically (shape and appearance) best sperm for injection.

  • Potentially higher fertilization rates: By selecting sperm with better morphology, IMSI may improve the chances of successful egg fertilization compared to standard ICSI.
  • Improved embryo quality: The theory is that using sperm with normal morphology might lead to healthier embryos with a better chance of implantation and pregnancy.

IMSI itself doesn't have any specific risks beyond those associated with standard IVF and ICSI procedures:

  • Multiple pregnancy: ICSI increases the chance of multiples (twins, triplets, etc.).
  • Ectopic pregnancy: A fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, which can be a medical emergency.
  • Miscarriage: The chance of miscarriage is similar to natural conception.
  • Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS): This is a rare but serious condition that can occur when the ovaries overreact to fertility medication.
  • Emotional stress: ICSI and IVF can be emotionally challenging.
