Embryo Transfer

An embryo transfer is the last step of an IVF cycle. It is a very crucial step. The success of the entire IVF cycle depends on the placement of the embryo at the proper site with minimal injury.

Embryos are placed near the middle of the endometrial lining of the uterus.

In the IVF procedure, multiple eggs are developed by egg stimulation injections. The matured eggs are removed, and sperms are inseminated into the eggs. After confirmation of fertilization, embryos are transferred by catheter to the uterus with the guidance of ultrasound.

When embryo is transplanted to uterus?

After fertilization of eggs, eggs are cultivated in the lab for 3 to 7 days for the development of the embryo. Embryos are then placed near the middle of the endometrial lining with the guidance of abdominal ultrasound. Implantation of the embryo on the uterus wall usually takes 2 to 5 days after the embryo transfer.

When one requires Embryo Transfer?

Many conditions require embryo transfer such as-

  • Damaged or scarred fallopian tubes
  • Moderate to severe endometriosis
  • Irregular ovulation
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Fibroids and tumors which interfere with natural egg implantation
  • Genetic disorders
  • Poor sperm factors like low count, poor motility, or testes damage which interferes with natural fertilization

What are the factors affecting success of implantation?

Successful implantation of the embryo to uterus depends on the following factors-

  • Quality of eggs- poor egg quality results in unhealthy embryos which fail to get implanted into the uterus
  • Health of uterus

What precautions one should take after Embryo Transfer?

  • Rest for the day after the plantation
  • Avoid strenuous physical exercise, but light exercise like yoga and a slow walk from the next day is good.
  • Avoid sexual intercourse because it can cause uterine contraction that leads to failing implantation of the embryo.
  • Avoid hot bath or heating pads
  • Take prescribed medicines on time
  • Avoid stress
  • Eat healthy meal
  • Take a daily folic acid supplement
